I pre-stained my handle with Oak Weaver's Stain before beginning the basket. Cut 8 spokes from 1/2" Flat Fiber Splint @ 22" long and 7 spokes @ 25" long. After cutting the spokes run them over your finger in the opposite direction of the curve. There is not a right or wrong side of the flat fiber splint. However, if the seam is more prevalent on one side than the other, I consider that the wrong side.

Put the handle down vertically on the table and lay a 25" spoke (good side down) on top of the handle, the next spoke will be under the handle and etc. You will have 4 on top of the handle and 3 spokes under. (Spokeweights and small clips come in handy). Weave in 4 of the 22" spokes on each side of the handle. Adjust base to measure 8" long x 5 1/2" wide.

Twine 1 time around as a holding row. You can take this out later. Remember - DO NOT WET FLAT FIBER SPLINT. Upset the spokes and weave the following start and stop rows (use small clips on the first few rows). 2 rows 1/2" flat fiber and 9 rows 3/8" flat fiber. Pack as you go. Cut and tuck the spokes in the usual way and rim with 1/2" Flat fiber, seagrass between rims and lash with 1/4" flat fiber.

I found the flat fiber splint easy to work with and the basket surprisingly very firm.
