Cut 7 spokes from 1/2" FF each 18" long. Dampen the spokes. Mark the center of the handle and all spokes on the wrong side. Insert 7 spokes into the slot in the handle, spacing them evenly. Bend the spokes up. Using clamps or clothespins to hold each spoke together at the top is helpful. You can remove the clamps after 2-3 rows of weaving.

Decide which will be the back and which will be the front of your basket. When weaving keep the spokes in the back up straight and flat. Let the front spokes lean forwardby gently pulling the spokes towards you. This will create space for your hands inside the basket in order to attach the buttons with twist ties when you are finished.

Weave 19 rows start & stop with 7mm FF. The first row will be woven on the outside of the handle. Keep adjusting the spacing of the spokes as you weave. Remember to let your front spokes lean forward slightly. As you weave, are you able to get your hands inside the basket?

Pack well, cut and tuck spokes. Rim with 1/2" FF inside and outside, seagrass between rims and lash with 3/16" FO.

Finishing Your Basket: If you plan to stain your completed basket, do so before attaching the buttons. There are two ways to attach buttons that have a shank on the back. You can use twist ties to secure them to the basket, or cut off the shank with flush cutters - always wear safety glasses - and glue to basket using a hot glue gun. The buttons on this basket were glued on.

All materials to make this basket are available at NC Basket Works.
