Children (and maybe adults too) will be delighted with this basket which hold
crayons and/or colored pencils.

Cut 16 spokes each 6" long from 7mm FF. Soak briefly. Mark the center of the base ( 1 3/4"). Insert a spoke at the center mark (smooth side down) and 2 spokes on each side of the center spoke. Repeat on the other side of the base. Insert 3 spokes on each short end for a total of 16 spokes. Because the spokes will be bent up immediately, I glued in all my spokes. Dry fit each spoke, then remove one at a time and glue it in. If the groove in your base is too narrow to insert the spokes, run sandpaper around the groove several times, and/or sand down the ends of each spoke (you want a tight fit).

Dampen the spokes and upset them. Weave the following rows start and stop. The first row of the 11/64" FO must be woven inside the center spoke followed by 3 more rows of 11/64" FO. Thread 1 crayon button onto a strand of 3mm FO. I started my 3mm FO weaver on the short end of the basket so it was easier to do the overlaps. The first button will go just past the first far left spoke on the front of the basket. Weave to the right around to the back of the basket and thread another button onto this same strand of 3mm FO. It too will go just past the first spoke on back of the basket. Refer to photo.

Weave 2 more rows of 11/64" FO before adding another button onto a strand of 3mm FO. The next button will go right after the 2nd spoke - you will be going up the basket like steps. Continue in this same manner until you have woven 4 buttons on the front and 4 buttons on the back. Just remember to weave 2 rows 11/64" FO in between the button rows. After all 8 buttons are woven on, weave 4 more rows of 11/64" FO and a rim row of 7mm FF.

Pack well as you go. Cut and tuck spokes. Rim with 3/8" FF inside and outside, seagrass between the rims, and lash with 11/64" FO.

All supplies to make this basket are available at N.C. Basket Works.
