Cut 32 spokes 1/2" FF 6 1/2" long. Insert spokes, smooth side down into base - handle side up. You will have 5 spokes on each end, one on each corner, and 9 on each side.
Weave with 3/16" FO. Do not over-wet base and handle while weaving.

Row one and two, weave as close to the base as possible, keeping the spokes flat.

Row three, upset the spokes and begin to shape the basket as you weave.

Weave 7 more rows, keeping the tension on your weaver so that the corner spokes take on the same shape as the base, and the end spokes hug the handle as much as possible.

Rows 11-12-13
Row 11 weave with dyed 3/16" FO
Row 12 weave with dyed 1/2" FF
Row 13 weave with dyed 3/16" FO

Weave approximately six more rows, ending with a rim row that will enable you to cut the spoke at the end of the handle, tucking the spokes on either side of the handle, cutting and tucking the remaining spokes in the usual manner.

Add the rim, using the seagrass for a filler and lash.

Cut 28 spokes 7" long from 1/2" FF. Cut 2 dyed spokes 1/4" FF approximately 6" long. Insert 28 spokes, smooth side down, handle up, having a spoke on either end of the handle and in the center of the remaining half circle.

Weave with 3/16" FO. Rows one, two and three weave close to the base, keeping the spokes flat.

Row four, upset the spokes and begin to shape slightly, keeping weavers close together and coming up slightly. As you weave and shape your basket, keep in mind the slant of the handle so that circle stays the same shape. It will tend to come up faster where there is no handle, so watch carefully.

Do not over-wet your base and handle assembly.

Weave 18 rows of 3/16" FO.

After the 18th row, insert the 1/4" FF dyed overlay spoke on top of the center spoke, front and back. Weave the 19th row with 1/4" FF dyed.

Weave 3 or 4 more rows with the 3/16" FO. Ending with a rim row that will enable yuo to cut the spokes at the end of the handle. Tucking the spokes on either side of the handle.

Cut and tuck in the usual manner. Rim with 1/2" FO, seagrass rim filler and lash with 3/16" FO.

Bows
To make bows, insert 1/4" FF dyed under the center spoke between the handles. The largest bow center front. Take a piece of 1/4" FF dyed approximately 24" long. Insert under dyed spoke, approximately 12" long to center. Make a loop to the right and bring it back behind the center spoke. Do the same to the left side. Slightly twist the ends and insert them behind the weaver under the 7th row one spoke either side of the center spoke. Repeat on opposite side of basket.

Small bows are made on the fourth spoke from center spoke on the 13th row. Cut a piece of 1/4" FF dyed reed about 18" long. Use the same techniques as with the large bows. Repeat small bows on the back.

All materials to make this basket are available at NC Basket Works.
