From 3/4" FF cut 4 spokes each 28" long and 7 spokes 25" long. Also cut 4 filler spokes from 3/8" FF each 18" long. Soak briefly along with a strand of #2R.
Put the handle down horizontally and mark the center. Lay a filler spoke (smooth side up) next to the handle, then a 28" spoke (smooth side down), then a filler spoke, and end with another 28" spoke. Repeat this layout on the other side of the handle. Weave in 1 center spoke vertically (smooth side down) starting under the horizontal spoke and over the filler spokes. Weave in 3 more spokes on each side of this center spoke. Adjust base to measure approximately 10" x 5 1/2". Fold the filler spokes to the underneath side of the base and tuck under the 3rd spoke of base weaving. Trim off any excess. Repeat on the other side. Twine 1 time around the base and handle with #2R. Upset the spokes and weave 15 rows of start and stop using 3/8" FF. Keep the spokes straight as they do want to slant. Pack well. Cut and tuck spokes. Rim with 3/4" FF inside and out, seagrass between rims, and lash with 3/16" FO. Stain your basket before attaching the Pink Ribbon Tie-on and Oval Wood Plaque (optional). Optional: The oval wood plaque can be painted white and the basket decorated as desired. All materials to make this basket (including the oval wood plaque) are available at NC Basket Works. |
