Cut 24 spokes from 3/8" FF each 13" long. Soak briefly. Insert 6 spokes on each long side of the base, 4 on each short side of the base, and 1 in each corner. I find it very helpful to glue in the spokes with Insta or Maxi Cure glue.

Twine 2 times around the base with #2 R. Upset the spokes and weave 1 row 3/8" FF, 2 rows 3/8" FF black, and approximately 11 rows of 7mm FF keeping the spokes up straight. The red overlays near the bottom of the basket can be added now or after the basket is completed. Refer to the photo.

The basket at this point is about 4 1/2"H. As you weave the next 8 rows of 7mm FF encourage your spokes to flare slightly outward (this will make a total of 19 rows of 7mm FF). Now weave 2 rows 3/8" FF black and 5 rows of 7mm FF. Pack well. Cut and tuck in the usual manner. Rim with 1/2" FF inside and outside, seagrass between rims, and lash with 11/64" FO.

Curls:
Soak the dyed paper thin maple in cold water and 1 capful of Retayne (a color fixative) for 1-2 minutes. Blot on a paper towel, then put into a plastic bag to "mellow" for 5 - 10 minutes. The curls are woven on the two black rows near the top of the basket. I found the maple was easier to work with by cutting the strand into 2 shorter pieces. Insert the end of a strand behind a vertical spoke, give a slight twist and insert the end behind the vertical spoke in the row below. DO NOT let the maple dry out. Continue around the basket working up and down. Refer to photo.
