Cut 5 spokes from 5/8" FF each 23" long and 9 spokes from 5/8" FF 18" long. Also cut 4 filler spokes from 3/8" FF each 16" long. Soak briefly, and mark centers. Layout the 5 long spokes horizontally alternating with the 4 filler spokes. Weave 1 center spoke vertically starting over the horizontal spoke and under the filler spokes. Weave in 4 more spokes on each side of this center spoke. Adjust base to measure 9" x 5". Fold the filler spokes to the underneath side of the base, and tuck under the 3rd spoke of base weaving. Trim off any excess. Repeat on the other end. Twine one time around the base with #2 R. Upset the spokes. The following rows are woven start and stop: 1 row 3/8" FF 3 rows 3/16" FO 2 rows 3mm dyed 3 rows 3/8" FF 2 rows 3mm dyed 4 rows 3/16" FO 1 row 3/8" FF (rim row) Pack well. CUt and tuck spokes in the usual manner. Rim with 1/2" FO outside and 1/2" FF inside, seagrass between rims and lash with 11/64" FO. The wooden star handle will be attatch to the back or the basket. Count 4 spokes over from the back center spoke and create a space under the rim (this will be just after the 4th spoke). Insert the wire from the outside of the basket inward, and bend the wire up over the rim and back down to the outside. Do the same on the other side.(Note: the handle is for decoration only. Do not pick up basket by the handle. If you plan to stain your basket, do it before gluing on the stars. Refer to photo for star placement. *A package consisting of 3mm dyed red & (4) 1" stars dyed red & blue is available. |
