From 1/2" FF cut 5 spokes each 29" long and 9 spokes 25" long. Also, from 3/8" FF cut 4 filler spokes 17" long. Soak briefly along with a strand of #2R.
Layout the 5 long spokes (29") horizontally (smooth side down) and alternate with the 4 filler spokes, which will be smooth side up. Weave in 1 center spoke vertically starting over the horizontal spoke and under the filler spokes. Weave in 4 more spokes on each side of the center spoke. Adjust the base to measure 9"L x 4 1/2"W. Fold the filler spokes to the underneath side of the base, and tuck under the 3rd spoke of base weaving. Trim off excess. Twine 1 time around the base with #2R. Upset the spokes. Weaver the following start & stop rows: 2 rows 1/2" FF, 19 rows 7mmFF. Pack well, cut and tuck spokes. Insert the bushel handle on the back of the basket. Rim with 3/8" FO outer rim, 3/8" FF inner rim, seagrass between, and lash with 7mm FF. I stained my basket with Oak Weaver's Stain and let it dry thoroughly before tying on the red mitten. I used a hot glue gun for securing the snowflakes to the basket. All materials to make this basket are available at NC Basket Works. |
