Base Size: 13"l x 6"w x 7"h Cut 5 spokes from 5/8" FF each 32" long and 12 spokes from 5/8" FF each 25" long. Also, cut 4 filler spokes from 1/2" FF each 18" long. Soak briefly. Mark the center of the handle and a few spokes. Lay the 5 spokes horizontally on top of the handle and alternate with the filler spokes (these will be under the handle.) Weave in vertically 6 spokes on each side of the handle. Adjust the base to 6"w x 13"l. Fold the filler spokes to the inside of the base. Create "chicken feet" by cutting the filler spoke ends in half lengthwise. |

Tuck these under the 2nd row of base weaving (5/8" spoke) on each side of the filler spoke. Trim off any excess. Repeat on the other end. Twine one time around base with #1 Round.
Upset the spoke, and weave the following rows of start and stop: 2 rows 3/8" FF 2 rows 1/4" FF - dyed cherry 1 row 1/4" FF - dyed violet 2 rows 1/4" FF - dyed cherry 7 rows 3/8" FF 2 rows 1/4" FF - dyed cherry 1 row 1/4" FF - dyed violet 2 rows 1/4" FF - dyed cherry 2 rows 3/8" FF (last row is the rim row) Pack well. Cut and tuck spokes in the usual manner. Rim with 1/2" FO, seagrass between rims and double lash with 11/64" FO. If you plan to stain your basket, do it now before attaching the Red Hat Basket Buckle ®. If you choose to make a liner, many choices of fabric are available at your local Wal-Mart or fabric shop. To attach the Red Hat Buckle ®, I braided 3 strands of yarn - 2 red strands and 1 violet strand. Handle and Red Hat Basket Buckle ® are available at NC Basket Works. |
