Cut 30 spokes from 1/2" FF each 8" long. If the groove in your base is too narrow to insert the spokes, run sandpaper around the groove several times, and/or sand
down the ends of each spoke (you want a tight fit). Insert all spokes into the base, spacing them evenly. Weave 2 rows 11/64" FO start and stop, keeping
the spokes FLAT. Then gently upset the spokes and weave 2 more rows 11/64" FO (for a total of 4 rows).
Weave start and stop the follow rows: 1 row 1/4" FF dyed walnut 1 row 1/4" FF dyed rust 1 row 11/64" FO 2 rows 1/2" walnut basket strips 1 row 11/64" FO 1 row 1/4" FF dyed rust 1 row 1/4" FF dyed walnut 3 rows 11/64" FO 1 row 7mm FF (rim Row) Pack well, cut and tuck spokes. Rim with 1/2" FO, seagrass between rims, and lash with 11/64" FO. Maple Curls: Soak in warm water for about 1 minute, then put into a plastic bag to "mellow" for about 15 minutes. I found the maple was easier to work with by cutting into 3 shorter pieces. Insert the end of the strand behind a vertical spoke, give a slight twist and insert the end behind the vertical spoke in the row below. Continue around the basket working up and down. Refer to photo. Spray with Weaver's Stain - I used Clear. All materials to make this basket are available at NC Basket Works. |
