Cut 2 "handle" spokes" from 3/4" FF each 28" long. Cut 22 spokes from 1/2" FF each 8 1/2" long. Soak briefly. Insert the 2 long "handle spokes" on each end of the base and then evenly space the 22 spokes of 1/2" FF between. I found it helpful to glue in the spokes. Twine one time around with #2R, keeping the spokes flat. DO NOT CUT THE ROUND REED. Gently upset the spokes and continue to twine 2 more times around. End off the round reed. Start and stop the following rows: 2 rows 7mm FF 1 row 1/4" FF Green 1 row 7mm FF 1 row 1/4" FF Mauve 1 row 7mm FF 1 row 1/4" FF Violet 1 row 7mm FF Repeat this series starting with 1/4" FF Green. End with 3 rows 7mm FF. Pack well. Cut and tuck spokes in the usual manner BUT DO NOT CUT OFF THE 3/4" FF HANDLE SPOKES. Thin down the ends of the inverted U handle before inserting it into the basket. Push the handle all the way down to the base. Bring each handle spoke up over the handle and overlap them. Clip the pieces along with a piece of 1/4" FF dyed reed (I used Violet) cut approximately 22" onto the handle. Wet a long piece of 3/16" FO for wrapping the handle. Wrap 4 times over the dyed piece, then 4 times under it, and repeat (or any pattern you desire). After the handle wrap is complete, rim with 1/2" FO, seagrass between the rims and lash with 3/16" FO. Spray with Clear Weaver's Stain and tie on the buckle with ribbon. All materials, including the Easter dyed reed pkg. are available at NC Basket Works. |
