Cut 20 spokes from 3/8" FF each 11" long. Soak briefly. Insert the spokes evenly around the base (gluing the spokes into the slit is optional, but I have this makes life easier). Twine with #2R twice around the base keeping the spokes flat. End off the #2R. Upset the spokes and weave in 3 rows of 1/4" FF dyed reed. Let the spokes slant outward slightly as you weave in 19 rows of 7mm FF (this creates the "bucket" effect). Keep in mind as you slant outward that your top diameter should be 6". End with 3 more rows of dyed reed, and 1 row of 7mm FF (rim row). Pack well. Choose your handle spokes - these will be spokes which are opposite each other and will be cut off flush. Position your eyelets here. Cut and tuck all remaining spokes, bending over the extended wire on both sides of the eyelet. Rim with 3/8" FO, seagrass between rims, and lash with 3/16" FO. Attach the wire handle. Tie on the Scarecrow Basket Buckle ® with raffia or twine. All supplies to make this basket are available at N.C. Basket Works. |
