Cut 61 spokes from 7mmFO each 12" long. Put a light pencil mark at the center of the base(6") and insert a spoke at this mark and one on the opposite side. Then insert 29 spokes on one side, and 30 spokes on the other side. Having an odd number of spokes allows for a continuous twill weave. Twine with #1R 2 times around, keeping the spokes flat. End off round reed. Gently upset the spokes. Taper the end of a long piece of 3/16" FO. Twill weave over 2, under 2 for approximately 33 rows or when the basket is about 7" high. Pack as you go. Measure often - your handle is 10" wide. Taper the weaver. Pack weaving again. Twine 2 times around with #1R. Two options for inserting the handle and rimming: 1. Place handle on center opposite spokes. Fold and tuck spokes over the extending rod. Cut and tuck the remaining spokes in the usual way. Rim with 5/8" FO, seagrass between rims, and single lash with 11/64" FO. OR Spray with Weaver's Stain. Attach a tie-on or add some spring flowers, if desired. All supplies to make this basket are available at N.C. Basket Works. |
