Base Size: 8" x 8" Square; Height: 10 3/4"; Top Diameter: 9 3/4" Cut 18 spokes each 35" long using 5/8" FF and 8 filler spokes each 14" using 7mm FF. Mark the centers of several spokes and filler spokes on the wrong side. Lay out 9 spokes horizontally alternately with 8 filler spokes. Line up center marks. Weave in 1 center spoke vertically starting under the horizontal spoke and weaving over the filler spokes. Weave in 4 more spokes on each side of this center spokes. Adjust base to 8" x 8" square. Fold the filler spokes to the inside of the base. Create "chicken feet" by cutting these filler spoke ends in half lengthwise. |

Tuck these under the 2nd row of base weaving (5/8" spoke) on each side of the filler spoke. Trim off any excess. Repeat on the other end. Twine one time around base with #2 R. Upset the spokes and weave the following rows of start and stop: (keep the spokes going straight up and an equal distance between each spoke) 2 rows 7mm FF dyed 1 row 1/2" FF - dyed 2 rows 7mm FF - dyed 11 rows 7mm FF - natural 2 rows 7mm FF - dyed 1 row 1/2" FF - dyed 2 rows 7mm FF - dyed 4 rows 7mm FF - natural At this point my basket measured approximately 11" in diameter. Pack well before putting on the "false" rim". DO NOT CUT SPOKES. Use 1/2" FO for the outside rim and 1/2" FF for the inside rim. Position the wrought iron handles on the center 3 spokes on opposite sides of the basket. The wrought iron handles will sit just above the rim. Double lash tightly with 11/64" FO. (It is important to lash tightly so the handles will stay more in an upright position and not flop downward onto the basket.) As you weave the next 8 rows of 7mm FF, push the spokes inward slightly, keeping an equal distance between your spokes. Pack well. Cut and tuck spokes. Rim with 1/2" FO (inside and out), seagrass between rims and double lash with 11/64" FO. |
