From 3/8"FF cut 22 spokes 8" long. Slightly dampen spokes. Run sandpaper around the groove of the lid if your spokes are too tight. Insert all 22 spokes, spacing them evenly around the lid. Twine 5 times around with #2R, keeping the spokes flat. DO NOT CUT THE #2R. Gently upset the spokes and continue to twine 4 more times. Weave start and stop the following rows: 7 rows 11/64"FO 2 rows 3/8"FF dyed 13 rows 11/64"FO - before weaving the 7mmFF rim row, check the height of a toilet tissue roll. Add another row or two of 11/64"FO if necessary. 1 row 7mmFF (rim row) Pack well. Cut and tuck all spokes in the usual manner. Use 3/8"FF for inner and outer rims, seagrass between rims, and double lash with 11/64"FO. Screw the knob to the lid from the inside of the basket. Curls Paper Thin Maple: soak in warm water for about 1 minute, then put into a plastic bag to "mellow" for about 15 minutes. I found the maple was easier to work with by cutting the strand into 3 shorter pieces. Insert the end of the strand behind a vertical spoke, give a slight twist and insert the end behind the vertical spoke in the row below. Continue around the basket working up and down. Refer to photo. Spray with Weaver's Stain. (I used Clear) All supplies to make this basket are available at N.C. Basket Works. |
