From 5/8" FF cut 9 spokes 34" long and 11 spokes 30" long. Also, from 7mm FF cut 8 spokes 20" long. Mark the center of several spokes and filler spokes on the wrong side. Layout 9 spokes (34") horizontally, alternating with the 8 filler spokes. Line up the center marks. Weave 1 center spoke vertically starting over the center horizontal spoke, and weaving under the filler spokes. Weave in 5 more spokes on each side of the center spoke. Adjust base to 8" x 12". Fold the filler spokes to the inside of the base. Create "chicken feet" by cutting the filler spokes in half lengthwise. |

Tuck these under the 2nd row of base weaving (5/8" spoke) on each side of the filler spoke. Trim off any excess. Repeat on the other end.
Twine one time around the base with #2R. Upset the spokes. Weave 17 rows of start and stop using 3/8" FF. The width of the basket at the top should be approximately 10" to accommodate the handles. Pack well. Cut and tuck spokes. Rim with 1/2" FO, seagrass between rims, and lash with 3/16" FO. I sprayed my handles and basket before attaching the handles to the basket. (I used Maple Weaver's Stain). Attaching the handles: Locate the centerspoke on the long side of the basket. Count 2 spokes over from this center spoke and put a pencil mark on the rim. This will be a "handle spoke". Repeat on the other side of the center spoke (there will be 3 spokes in between the "handle spokes"). Do the same on the opposite side of the basket. Dampen the rim area before drilling the holes through the 1/2" FO. If the lasher is in the way, just move it slightly to one side. Attach the handles with #6 brass screws, bead, washer and nut. Profile of handle attchment (from outside to inside of basket) -- screw, bead, handle, washer, rim and nut. Cut off the screw it it is too long, and file the end if needed. Tie on the Cardinal Basket Buckle ® with red ribbon and add greenery if desired. All supplies to make this basket are available at NC Basket Works. |
