If you plan to paint you base, do it first and let it dry. (I painted mine black). Cut 28 spokes each 8 1/2" long using 3/8" FF. Soak briefly. Insert the spokes evenly around the base. I found it very helpful to glue in the spokes. Weave 2 rows of 11/64" FO start and stop, keeping the spokes FLAT. Then gently upset the spokes DO NOT CREASE THE SPOKES. Weave 20 more rows of start and stop using 11/64" FO (for a total of 22 rows). Allow you spokes to flair outward slightly, then come back in slightly. Pack well before putting on the "false rim". Weave 1 row of 3/8" FF. DO NOT CUT AND TUCK YOUR SPOKES. Use "Tacky Glue" to glue the ribbon part of the beaded fringe onto this 3/8" FF row. Clip on 1/2" FF inside & outside over this row. Double lash with Black Waxed Cotton Cord (approx. 9'). Now Continue to weave start and stop with 11/64" FO for 9 more rows. Weave in a row of 3/8" FF(rim row). Pack well. Cut and tuck in the usual manner. Rim with 1/2" FF inside and outside, round reed between rims, and double lash with Black Waxed Cotton Cord (approx 9'). All supplies to make this basket are available at N.C. Basket Works. |
