General Directions: Cut 36 spokes each 8" long using 5/8" FF. Soak breifly along with a few long strands of #3R. If the groove in your base is to narrow to instert spokes, run some sandpaper around it the groove several times, and/or sand down the ends of each spoke. You want a tight fit. Insert 7 spokes on each end, 9 spokes on each long side, and 1 spoke in each corner. Twine (or chase weave) 2 times around, keeping the spokes flat. DO NOT CUT WEAVERS. Gently upset the spokes and continue to twine 4 more times around (you will have 6 pieces of round reed over each spoke). End off the round reed. Weave 2 rows 3/16" FO start and stop, 1 row dyed 3mm FO, and 1 row 3/16" FO. Thread the dyed beads onto a 4ft. piece of #3R (slighty damp), and weave in, placing a bead in between each spoke. Cut the #3R and butt the ends behind a spoke. Continue start and stop weaving with 1 row 3/16" FO, 1 row dyed 3mm FO, and 4 rows of 3/16" FO. Pack Well. Version 1: Leather Straps - Weave in 1 row 3/8" FF (rim row) threading this row through the looped ends of the leather straps. You will have 3 spokes in between. The spokes for your straps must be spokes that will be cut off flush. If not, add 1 more row of weaving. Cut & tuck all spokes as usual. Rim with 1/2" FO (thread it through the looped ends), seagrass between rims, and lash with 3/16" FO. Version 2: Wrought Iron Side Handles - Weave in 1 row of 3/8" FF (rim row). Cut off flush the center spoke and bend the spoke on either side over the base of the wrought iron side handles. Cut & tuck remaining spokes. Rim with 5/8" FO, seagrass between and lash with 3/16" FO. 10" Black leather straps (also available in light or dark chestnut), wrought iron side handles, pkg. of 8mm beads dyed black with 2 strands of 3mm FO dyed black is available at NC Basket Works. |
