Cut 36 spokes each 13" long using 1/2" FF. Soak briefly along with a long strand of #2 R. Cut 6 pieces of 1/4" FF dyed reed(overlays) each 6 1/2" long. Set these aside for later. Put a light pencil mark at 5" on the wood base. Insert a spoke at this center mark and one on the opposite side. You will have 11 spokes on each long side, 5 on each short side, and 1 in each corner. I found it very helpful to glue in the spokes. Twine 2 times around the base with #2 R. Upset the spokes and weave 2 rows of 3/8" FF start and stop. Your first row of weaving will be inside the center spoke. Switch to 7mm FF and weave 18 rows. If you plan to add the 1/4" FF dyed overlays, insert them after weaving a few row of 7mm FF. Keep the spokes going up straight and with equal distance between them. Pack well before putting on the handles and "false rim". Weave 1 row of 3/8" FF(false rim row). DO NOT CUT SPOKES. The handles will be attached to this 3/8" FF "false rim" row. Attach the straps by counting over 3 spokes from the center spoke. Slip 3/8" FF through the loop on the ends of the handles as you weave in the "false rim" row. You will have 5 spokes in between the "handle spokes". These "handle spokes" must be spokes that the weaver will go over - if not, add one more row. Use 1/2" FO for the outside rim(thread it through the loop), and 1/2" FF inside. Double lash with 11/64" FO. (I found cable ties to be helpful at this point). Cut off the extra lenght of overlays. Weave 6 more rows of 7mm FF, pushing the spokes inward and 1 row of 3/8" FF(rim row). Pack well. Cut and tuck spokes. Rim with 1/2" FO, seagrass between rims, and double lash with 11/64" FO.
